Scheduling is a decision-making process for committing resources to a variety of possible tasks, which has important applications in modern industries. Many real-world scheduling problems relating to industrial and manufacturing engineering, computer science, operations research, healthcare, transportation and business are NP-Hard. In past decades, metaheuristic or intelligent optimisation algorithms including genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimisation, differential evolution, iterated greedy, iterated local search and variable neighbourhood search, among many others, have been widely applied to such problems.

However, the scientific community still observes a noticeable gap between the theory and practice of scheduling. This special issue will therefore focus on recent and innovative developments in metaheuristic algorithms to solve real-world scheduling problems, with the aim of bridging the gap between theory and practice.

We invite rigorous methodological/theory papers on metaheuristic algorithms to solve scheduling problems.

Submitted papers should not have been previously published nor be currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. (N.B. Conference papers may only be submitted if the paper has been completely re-written and if appropriate written permissions have been obtained from any copyright holders of the original paper).
